Banyalbufar, in Mallorca´s Tramuntana Mountains, is a small, pretty hill town on the west coast of the island.
Come to Banyalbufar for nature walks, excursions and magnificent scenic views!
Banyalbufar, on the western coast of Mallorca, is 34, 9 km from Palma de Mallorca airport and will take approximately 42 minutes by airport transfer.
Situated in the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range which spreads over the western side of the island, Banyalbufar is on the road between Andratx and Valldemossa, near the picturesque towns of Estellencs, Puigpunyent, Esporles, Deia and Valldemossa.
The town was founded as a Moorish settlement in the 10th century, and it was during this Arabic period that the vast and impressive water network was built. By creating a sophisticated water system of dry stone walls, water basins and an elaborate aqueduct, they were able to reclaim working land and irrigate the remote mountain hillside.
These outstanding constructions in dry stone, the cultural heritage and symbiosis between man and nature in this remote and steep part of the Serra de Tramuntana resulted in a mesmerising terraced landscape which was awarded protection by the UNESCO as World Heritage Site.
The name of the town is a combination of two Arabic words: Banya, meaning constructed and Bahar, which together come to mean something like Built by the sea.
The Bay of Port de Canonge is a working fishing port, which comes alive at weekends when local fishermen take their boats out to sea. The beach is tiny and pebbled,
Other beaches near Banyalbufar are Cala Banyalbufar, Es Corral Fals and Son Bunyola.
Cala Banyalbufar is a small rocky inlet with a very narrow pebbled beach backed by steep vertical walls of rock and pine forest, and accessible by car. The water is mesmerizingly clear and great for snorkelling and diving.
Wine has been produced in Banyalbufar since Moorish times. During the middle ages, the town was essentially a large vineyard spread over its 2000 steppes, dedicated exclusively to agriculture, and particularly to producing the highly prized Malvasia grape variety. There are accounts which claim that part of the reason for the re-conquest of Mallorca was spurred by Jaume I, King of Aragon’s love for the region’s wine.
You can visit Banyalbufar’s vineyards and enjoy a day out of wine tasting at the local wineries.
The Bodega Ca’n Pico is a tiny winery perched on the edge of the village, with only half an acre of terraced vineyards looking out to sea and an average annual wine production of just 5000 litres.
From small bistros to high end restaurants with spectacular terraces overlooking the sea, Banyalbufar has a wide and varied selection of eateries, serving local cuisine, paellas, fish and sea food, as well as tapas and traditional rice dishes, so popular in Mallorca.
