Today we will start with one of our favourite beaches; Formentor beach, in the north of Mallorca, 82 km from Palma de Mallorca airport. Mallorca airport transfers to Formentor beach will take approximately 1 hour and 13 minutes.
Formentor beach is a mile long stretch of clean golden sand with turquoise blue sea and shady trees overhanging right to the water’s edge, set against a majestic mountain backdrop on what is the northern side of the vast Bay of Pollensa at the northernmost tip of the island, and one of its most exclusive residential areas in Mallorca.
The nearest town to Formentor beach is Puerto Pollensa (or Port de Pollenca) a few kilometres in the centre of the Bay of Pollensa and a long winding road away. Cyclists do cycle here and there is the occasional ferry, but invariably, you will have to drive, and the drive can be hairy.
Alternatively, book our highly accomplished transfer drivers to take you directly to Formentor beach by direct airport transfer service from your hotel or villa and make this a real day out on the beach in Mallorca.
Formentor beach is possibly the most stunning beach on the entire northern coastline of Mallorca and as such it can get pretty busy in the summer peak season. Try to go there on the weekend and you will struggle to find parking in the expensive paid car park, let alone a free parking spot along the side of the road.
Opting for airport transfers to Formentor beach is once again a good idea for parking reasons alone.
Eating on Formentor beach is permitted, and picnic tables in the pine shaded area near the beach are conveniently provided free of charge. This is what the locals do on weekends throughout the summer and it is one way of saving money.
There are two places to eat on Formentor beach, the small yet expensive snack bar and La Varanda restaurant on the beach, both extortionate in price and not great in quality but located in an unbeatable setting. If you are going for a luxury day out then this is the way to go.
Platja Mar Restaurant, owned and run by Hotel Formentor, provides a buffet service and fresh meat, fish and seafood dishes cooked in front of you and served at your table right on the beach.
Sandy beaches are not everyone’s cup of tea, but when you hire a hotel parasol and sun lounger for the day on Formentor beach, you can enjoy the magnificent setting without the discomforts of sandy towels and scorching sunlight and you can get your drinks served here from the bar!
Be warned however that the beach and consequently the sun lounger and parasol hire rates have been divided into three sections with quite a difference in prices, ranging from 13,50 € for the day on one side of the beach to a mighty 50 € a day on the far side
There is a massage pavilion between the restaurant and the hotel which provides massages by appointment.
A life guard services provides protection and support along Formentor beach throughout the day, between 10.30 am and 6.30 pm in the peak summer and from 11 am until 5 pm in the spring and autumn. And they will help with all kinds of eventualities while being an extra set of eyes on kids playing near the shore and general help if necessary.
Formentor beach has all the amenities you could ask for without forfeiting on taste and class. This applies too to disability access, with wooden walkways down to the shoreline and wheelchair friendly terrain.
This is a blue flag beach and it shows. There are toilets, showers, tourist information and water stations, a café and a few small souvenir shops selling towels, snorkels and fishing nets.
