From leisurely fun to downright challenging, Mallorca has miles of cycling routes all over the island, in the mountains and the flats and round the 550km of coastline.

Choosing 5 top cycling routes in Mallorca is a challenge in itself. However, there are a few key rides which are worth attempting, if not for the challenge then for the scenery and the breath taking views. Wherever you happen to stay on the island, a few of these must-do cycling routes in Mallorca should make their way into your cycling itinerary.

The Formentor peninsula is Mallorca’s northernmost point and the setting for some of the most spectacular views on the island. It is also a short but extremely hilly and challenging cycling route, 40 km (25 miles) with 1600 m of climbing which will take you from Puerto Pollensa to the Cap de Formentor lighthouse and back. For longer cycling routes in Mallorca north it can be combined with the Lluc monastery or a loop around Alcudia.

SA CALOBRA

This is one of Mallorca’s most famous and spectacular rides. It begins with the ascent at Coll de Femenia and ends via Coll de Sa Batalla and takes you right down to the beach at Sa Calobra where the only way out is to climb back up. 26 hairpin turns, over 10 km, with sheer drops on the side of the road, this is one of Mallorca's top cycling routes for climbers, short but extremely hairy and breathtakingly beautiful.

SERRA DE TRAMUNTANA

No mention of top cycling routes in Mallorca would be complete without at least one epic cycle in the Tramuntana Mountains. Whether you start in the south in Andratx or Pollensa in the north this is a monster ride over 168 km with up to 4000 m of climbing, depending on which side you start on, and seven Cat 3 and higher rated climbs. The cycling routes stick mainly to the MA-10, the road that crosses the entire mountain range from point to point but there are variations on cycling routes and possible loops which allow for all kinds of cycling levels.

PUIG DE RANDA

The Puig de Randa is a 518m high mountain in the south of Mallorca near Lluchmajor which offers views across the whole island, not too steep or challenging, this one of the favourite cycling routes in Mallorca. You can access the Puig de Randa either from the more difficult south side or from the north which is more crowded. Puig de Randa is often undertaken as part of the 3 hilltop monasteries cycling route in the south, which takes in San Salvador, Cura de Randa and the Bonany monastery in a 110 km.

ARTÁ AND THE EAST COAST

The east coast of Mallorca boasts the island’s second mountain range, the Serra de Llevant, less majestic but also much less known with some of the most unspoiled beaches on the island. This route covers 125 km and runs between Pollensa, Alcudia, Colonia San Pere, Artá, Manacor and Sineu, taking in a lot of miles without any serious climbs. Good for clocking distances and for leisurely cycling. It is also one of the top cycling routes in Mallorca's more unknown corners; it takes you through the almond and orange groves and small forgotten villages of the east, a great place to stop on route for a drink and a snack.
